Dec 26, 2023..

A newly married Bangladeshi woman was arrested in Brajendranagar village of Kadamtala in North Tripura along the Assam border on Monday night and sent to jail on the charges of illegally entering the Indian Territory.

She was arrested in a joint operation of state police and BSF acting on secret information.

The woman was booked under the Passport Act for illegal entry into the Indian Territory and detained from the house of one Sudhangshu Das.

The detained Bangladeshi woman, identified as Jani Rani Das (25) is a resident of Hakaluki area under the Baralekha police station in Moulvibazar district, Bangladesh.

However, Sudhangshu Das, who claimed to bringing her to Tripura, fled away, evading police eyes during the raid. The court remanded her to judicial custody for five days for further investigation.

The search is continuing for Sudhangshu Das for illegally transporting the Bangladeshi citizen and sheltering her.

She claimed, “I got separated from my husband for two years, but my divorce is under trial, and I was residing with my parents. A year ago, I fell in love with Sudhangshu Das (50), who is a visitor to her locality, and we got married on December 17 at a Jagannath temple in Kulaura, Bangladesh.”

Three days ago, Sudhangshu brought the woman to his village, Brajendranagar illegally, and they started living as husband and wife. There was no problem in the family. But police got a specific complaint about the presence of a Bangladeshi woman in the house and conducted a raid.

A case was registered with Kadamtala police station two days ago under Section 12(B)/213 of the IPC and other sections of the Passport Act, based on which police launched an investigation but failed to arrest Sudhangshu and his close aide, Sushil Das, who was accused of assisting the former in crossing the border illegally with the woman.

Meanwhile, in a separate raid, police apprehended a group of 12 Bangladeshi nationals in the Teliamura area of Khowai district who had been residing in the guise of winter garment vendors and pretended to be migrant Indians in a secure rental accommodation on Sunday, and now they were also sent to jail.

The police investigation revealed that the accused had duped their landlord by providing fake identity cards claiming affiliation with Assam and Uttar Pradesh in the last month. Acting on a tip-off, police detained them from their rented room.

It was disclosed that they utilized multiple illegal routes to reach Teliamura and establish residence. All twelve were found to hail from the Gopalganj area of Bangladesh, and cellphone records uncovered connections to relatives residing in West Bengal, police said.

The investigation further revealed that the winter garments they sold in Tripura were sourced from West Bengal with the assistance of their relatives living there. They not only misrepresented their identities but also engaged in deceptive practices, exploiting the trust of locals and utilizing fake documents to secure accommodation.
