Bengal: Mamata Banerjee accuses Governor Bose of violating Constitution by appointing VCs
Kolkata/UNI: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused Governor C V Ananda Bose of violating the Constitution by appointing " his friends as vice-chancellors in the state-owned universities.
'We have another eye over us now. I respect his ( governor) chair but he is violating the Constitution. Look at the condition of the universities.
"He is appointing his friends as vice chancellors. For instance, an IPS officer with no experience as a professor has been appointed vice chancellor. The BJP cell president was appointed as V-C of Jadavpur University."
The Governor, by virtue of his office, is also the chancellor of the state-owned universities.
Banerjee, who is also the ruling Trinamool Congress chairperson, said this while addressing his party's student wing's foundation day on Monday in the city.
"There should be mutual respect towards the roles dictated to us as per the law. Their position is not the same as that of the Chief Minister.
While they are nominated, we are elected. Nobody should try to undermine an elected government or stoke communal fires," the Chief Minister said.
"Students are being called and questioned about corruption. But first, they must answer: 'Who engaged in corruption during the time of demonetization'? the TMC supremo asked.
"Closure of banks, shady foreign deals, commodification of the private sector, corruption in Covid vaccinations, and suppressing facts—who engaged in such graft?" Banerjee questioned.
