McKinsey, 40, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds in Dublin on Saturday afternoon.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

His in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, were arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into Santa Rita Jail, Dublin Police Services said.

Shooting at California sports park

A Dublin police sergeant found McKinsey lying in the parking lot at around 3:08 pm on Saturday after several 911 calls reporting a shooting.

An eyewitness told local media that he saw McKinsey fall to the ground after being shot.

McKinsey was the director of engineering for New York Times Games, where he had worked since 2023.

The New York Times confirmed his death and employment.

Family dispute and restraining orders

The shooting occurred amid an ongoing and contentious divorce and child custody dispute between McKinsey and his wife, Candice Jang, according to court records and media reports.

Both McKinsey and Jang had sought domestic violence protection orders against each other in 2025.

Court records cited in media reports show that McKinsey had accused his wife and her parents of abusing him, including making anti-LGBTQ+ remarks related to his transgender identity.

McKinsey alleged that his mother-in-law called him and one of his sons derogatory names over the child's choice of clothing. He also accused his father-in-law of punching him in the chest while he was recovering from double mastectomy surgery.

He further alleged that Jang had attempted to pull medical tubes from his body during his gender transition and, in another incident, had hit him with a frying pan.

Wife had also made allegations

Jang made separate allegations against McKinsey in court filings.

In an October 2025 filing, she accused him of grabbing her forearm and dropping her onto the corner of a table, causing an injury to her vertebrae.

McKinsey was also facing criminal proceedings after Jang accused him of assaulting their six-year-old son. Reports said he was charged with two misdemeanour counts related to child abuse in 2025.

Police have not publicly disclosed a motive for the killing, and the investigation remains ongoing.
