Kolkata Police arrests man with suspected links to Pakistani intelligence operative
Kolkata: A 36-year-old man suspected of working as a spy for Pakistan has been arrested in Kolkata, and several sensitive documents have been recovered from his possession, media reported on Saturday citing police sources.
Acting on a tip-off, Kolkata Police officials arrested the individual from his residence in Howrah on Friday night and took him into custody after hours of questioning at the Special Task Force's office in Kolkata.
The arrested man is originally from Darbhanga district in Bihar.
"The detained individual was found to be directly involved in activities that pose a threat to the safety of the country," the officer stated.
Evidence in the form of photographs, videos, and online chats containing sensitive information was discovered on his mobile phone. These materials were allegedly sent by him to a suspected intelligence operative in Pakistan.
His mobile device has been seized as well.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the man had been working with a courier service company in Kolkata and had previously resided in Delhi.
He had been residing in the Howrah area for the last three months after moving from Delhi. He was apprehended on Friday from that location and was interrogated at our office, police said.
A local court has remanded him in police custody until September 6.
The accused has been arrested under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Official Secrets Act.
