New Delhi: During his 'Mann ki Baat' radio program on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended Brian D Kharpran, a resident of Meghalaya, for his role in the exploration of caves in the northeastern region.

In the 104th episode of the monthly broadcast, Modi introduced Brian D Kharpran, hailing from Meghalaya, as an enthusiast of speleology, which refers to the scientific study of caves.

Modi mentioned that 76-year-old Kharpran discovered his passion for this field years ago through storybooks, and he initiated his first exploration as a school student back in 1964.

Notably, Kharpran and a friend co-founded the Meghalaya Adventurers' Association (MAA) in 1990, with the aim of uncovering hidden caves within Meghalaya.

Over the years, they have discovered more than 1,700 caves in the state, earning a place on the 'World Cave Map'.

The Prime Minister highlighted that Meghalaya boasts some of India's longest and deepest caves.

Their research has revealed rare species not found anywhere else on the planet.
