Masked assailant apprehended for attacking Gurdwara Granthi in Sultanpur Lodhi
In a disturbing incident, the granthi of Gurdwara Hatt Sahib located in Sultanpur Lodhi was subjected to an attack by an unidentified masked individual, as reported by the local police on Friday.
The suspect, identified as Lakhbir Singh, hailing from Sarupwal village, was eventually subdued by the sewadars present at the scene, leading to his subsequent arrest.
Apparently, Lakhbir had been a frequent visitor to Gurdwara Hatt Sahib. However, on Thursday evening, he entered the premises donning a mask, disregarding the objections raised by the sewadars. Undeterred, he proceeded to offer his prayers within the sacred space, as recounted by Deputy Superintendent of Police, Babandeep Singh of Sultanpur Lodhi.
Upon exiting the gurdwara, Lakhbir engaged in a confrontation with the sewadars who had surrounded him. During the altercation, he brandished a small sword and assaulted the granthi, Amritpal Singh, causing him minor injuries. Subsequently, the sewadars managed to overpower the assailant and promptly handed him over to the local authorities, elaborated DSP Babandeep Singh.
Amritpal Singh, who suffered a minor arm injury, received immediate medical attention and was discharged following the administration of first aid, as confirmed by the police.
A case has been registered against Lakhbir under the appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 295, which pertains to injuring or defiling a place of worship with the intent to insult the religion of any particular community, stated the Deputy Superintendent of Police.
