Weeks after Jagdeep Dhankhar shockingly resigned as the Vice President of India, the country's ruling coalition NDA picked Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan for the post.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Jagat Prakash Nadda on Sunday announced Radhakrishnan's name after a parliamentary board meeting.
The meeting was attended by senior BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The seat fell vacant after Dhankhar stepped down from the post on the first day of the monsoon session on July 21 citing health issues.
The election will be held on September 9. The result will be declared on the same day.
