Shillong/IBNS: In a bid to revolutionize tourism in North East India, Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh recently concluded his visit to Switzerland, marking a significant step forward for the highly anticipated Shillong Ropeway project.

The venture, valued at over Rs 140 crore, is set to become the largest undertaking in the region, thanks to funding from the esteemed Asian Development Bank (ADB), reporetd Northeast Now.

During a press conference, Minister Lyngdoh expressed his unwavering enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its potential to drive economic growth and provide extensive employment opportunities in Meghalaya.

Anticipating a substantial surge in tourist footfall, the minister highlighted the pivotal role tourism will play as the foremost employment avenue in the state.

To illustrate the profound impact of tourism, Minister Lyngdoh shared an inspiring example from Sohra, where homeowners previously earned a modest average of Rs 3,000 per month.

However, with the influx of visitors, they now earn an astonishing Rs 3,000 per room per day, underscoring the transformative power of tourism in the region.

Minister Lyngdoh unveiled that his visit to Switzerland was met with great anticipation from the Swiss government, who extended an invitation to collaborate on implementing the ropeway project in accordance with European standards.

The choice of Switzerland was deliberate, considering its technological expertise, similarity in climatic conditions, and comparable topographic features to Meghalaya.

Highlighting the multifaceted benefits of the Shillong Ropeway project, Minister Lyngdoh emphasized that it would not only boost the local economy but also encompass various amenities, including gaming, entertainment, and the construction of a park.

Moreover, the project aims to prioritize inclusivity by incorporating facilities to cater to individuals with disabilities. Notably, the ropeway system will have the capacity to accommodate over 600 people per hour, ensuring a seamless experience for visitors.

Providing a comprehensive timeline for the project, Minister Lyngdoh revealed, “The project is expected to take flight by August. We will commence the tendering process, and by December, we aim to initiate the groundwork. The entire project is projected to be completed within a span of two years,” he concluded, promising an extraordinary addition to the Meghalaya tourism landscape.

With Minister Lyngdoh at the helm, the Shillong Ropeway project holds immense promise for the region, poised to unlock new opportunities, elevate the local economy, and solidify Meghalaya's position as a must-visit destination in North East India.
