Murder accused Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar seeks interim bail
New Delhi: Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar, one of the accused in the Sagar Dhankar murder case, on Thursday sought interim bail from Rohini Court in Delhi on medical grounds.
Kumar has been in judicial custody since June 2, 2021.
Kumar's lawyer told the court that he was suffering from a tear of an anteromedial bundle of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) since August 2016 and since then he has been under treatment for the problem.
He further submitted that Kumar was advised to undergo surgery for the malady on April 6, but could not take the surgery due to his father's demise.
The counsel submitted that the Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi, has given the date for Kumar's MRI as January 7, 2024.
He said Kuma wanted to take a second opinion from a reputed private hospital where he can get the best treatment from eminent doctors at the earliest.
He submitted that Kumar's medical documents are also annexed with the interim bail application.
The Additional Sessions Judge after hearing the submission directed the Investigating Officer (IO) to verify Kumar's medical documents and file the verification report on the next date of hearing.
The Court said, "Put up for filing of verification report by the IO and arguments on the above said application on date fixed i.e.07.07.2023. IO is also directed to appear on the next date of hearing."
Sushil Kumar, along with others, is accused of allegedly assaulting former junior national wrestling champion Dhankar and his friends in the parking lot of the Chhatrasal Stadium, Delhi on May 4, 2021, over an alleged property dispute.
The police have alleged that the two wrestlers were involved in a dispute over the payment of rent of a flat which snowballed into a fatal brawl after Dhankar abused Kumar.
Dhankar later succumbed to his injuries during treatment in the hospital and as per the post-mortem report, he died due to cerebral damage.
