Muslim cleric slams Mohammed Shami for not observing ‘roza’ during Champions Trophy, cousin defends him
New Delhi: Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has come under fire from All India Muslim Jamaat national president Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi for consuming an energy drink during the semi-final of the 2025 Champions Trophy against Australia while Ramadan fasting was underway, media reports said.

Speaking to ANI, Razvi said, "One of the compulsory duties of Islam is 'Roza' (fasting). If any healthy man or woman doesn't observe 'Roza', then they will have committed a great sin."
'He has committed a crime': Razvi
Razvi strongly criticised Shami for drinking during the match, asserting that it sets a wrong example.
"A famous cricket personality of India, Mohammed Shami had water or some other beverage during a match. People were watching him. If he is playing, it means he is healthy. In such a condition, he did not observe 'Roza' and even had water. The entire world saw him doing this," he stated.
He further added, "This sends a wrong message among people. By not observing 'Roza', he has committed a crime. He should not do this. In the eyes of Shariat, he is a criminal. He will have to answer God."
Shami's cousin defends him
Following the criticism, Shami’s cousin, Mumtaz, defended the cricketer, highlighting his commitment to the country and questioning the backlash.
“He is playing for the country. There are many Pakistani players who have not kept ‘Roza’ and are playing matches, so this is nothing new. It is very shameful that such things are being said about him," Mumtaz told ANI.
He further urged Shami to stay focused on his game.
"We will tell Mohammed Shami not to pay attention to these things and prepare for the match on March 9," he added.
