New Delhi: The Central government is extending its full support to tourists seeking to return home from Jammu and Kashmir in the aftermath of the terror attack in Pahalgam, Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Shekhawat said on Wednesday.

“In light of yesterday's tragic incident in Kashmir, many tourists are understandably anxious and reconsidering their travel plans. I've spoken to the concerned authorities and urged airlines, hotels, and tour operators to allow full refunds without hassle,” Shekhawat posted on X.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also addressed the growing concern among tourists, saying, “Although it is heartbreaking to see the exodus of our guests from the valley after yesterday's tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, at the same time we totally understand why people would want to leave.”

Authorities in Srinagar have set up a dedicated control room at the airport to help passengers and streamline departures.

The move is part of a wider set of measures to reinforce security across the region after the attack that claimed at least 26 lives—most of them tourists—near Baisaran meadow close to Pahalgam town on Tuesday afternoon.

This is the deadliest terror strike in the valley since the 2019 Pulwama bombing.

The Union Territory administration is also coordinating with airlines to facilitate the return of the victims’ mortal remains and support grieving families travelling from different parts of the country.

In the wake of the tragedy, travel agents in Delhi reported that about 90 percent of bookings for Jammu and Kashmir had been cancelled due to security concerns.

Until the incident, destinations like Gulmarg, Hajan Valley, and the Tulip Gardens witnessed high tourist footfall.

Refunds and rescheduling for travellers

Responding to the situation, several airlines and travel companies have introduced flexible options for affected passengers.

Air India, IndiGo, and EaseMyTrip are offering free cancellations and rescheduling for tickets booked before April 22, valid for travel until April 30.

Both Air India and IndiGo have deployed special flights from Srinagar to Delhi and Mumbai, while also waiving change and cancellation fees on the affected routes.

EaseMyTrip has implemented similar waivers and is actively coordinating with airlines and local authorities to ensure real-time updates.

The company's co-founder Nishant Pitti reassured customers on X, stating, “Your safety and convenience remain our top priorities. We have extended free change and cancellation waivers for all bookings made on or before April 22, applicable for travel up to April 30. We are closely coordinating with airlines and local authorities and will share regular updates.”

In light of the ongoing situation in Srinagar, we @EaseMyTrip are fully committed to supporting our customers who are traveling to or from Srinagar. We understand the uncertainty this situation may cause and are here to minimize any inconvenience to your travel plans.
