Rs 5,000 to women ahead of Tamil Nadu polls! Vijay slams Stalin, says: ‘take the money, blow the whistle’
Chennai/IBNS: Actor-turned-politician Vijay has slammed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin for crediting Rs 5,000 — including an advance payment of Rs 3,000 — under a state-sponsored scheme for women just weeks ahead of the Assembly elections, media reports said.
Vijay, who heads his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), on Friday accused the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) of attempting to buy votes ahead of the polls expected this summer.
Besides attacking the ruling camp, the TVK chief urged voters to accept the money but vote against the DMK.
“Take the money, but blow the whistle,” he was quoted as saying by NDTV.
The cash transfer of Rs 5,000 to each beneficiary includes an extra Rs 2,000 described as a ‘special summer allowance’, which has further angered Vijay ahead of his electoral debut.
"How was this 'special summer allowance' of Rs 2,000 announced? Does summer only occur this year? The reason for this... is the sound of the whistle heard in every street and home," Vijay said as quoted by the broadcaster.
In an outreach to women voters, Stalin has announced that the existing monthly assistance of Rs 1,000 to over one crore beneficiaries would be doubled if the DMK returns to power.
Vijay also criticised restrictions limiting the gathering to 5,000 people at the rally and the administration’s move to verify identity cards of attendees.
The curbs followed a deadly stampede in Karur during a TVK rally that drew massive crowds, leaving 41 people dead.
