Unacceptable: UN chief Antonio Guterres condemns terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir

Apr 23, 2025..

United Nations Chief Antonio Guterres on Wednesday condemned the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's popular tourist destination Pahalgam that left 28 people killed.

UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, responding to inquiries, emphasised the Secretary-General's condemnation of the attack.

The vile terror attack in Pahalgam today stole so many innocent lives.

My deepest condolences to @narendramodi and every Indian heart grieving today.

Yet I know that India’s spirit is unbreakable.

You will stand strong in this ordeal.

And Europe will stand with you.

Guterres extends his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, said Dujarric, underscoring “that attacks against civilians are unacceptable under any circumstances.”

Europe Will Stand With You, Says Ursula Von Der Leyen

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen joined global leaders in condemning the attack and said the incident would not be able to break the spirit of India.

"The vile terror attack in Pahalgam today stole so many innocent lives. My deepest condolences to @narendramodi and every Indian heart grieving today," she wrote on X.

"Yet I know that India’s spirit is unbreakable. You will stand strong in this ordeal. And Europe will stand with you," she said.

Pahalgam Terror Attack

In one of the worst terror strikes that targeted tourists in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam amid the ongoing visit of US Vice-President JD Vance to India, gunmen killed at least 28 people and wounded many others after identifying them as non-Muslims on Tuesday, triggering a nationwide outrage and condemnation from all quarters, according to media reports.

Gunshots were heard in the upper meadows of Pahalgam's Baisaran Valley around 2:30 PM, which is accessible only on foot or on horseback.

The terrorists were apparently in camouflage, and it is believed to be a targeted attack.

The attackers reportedly asked about the religious identities of the victims before opening fire on them.

The terrorists reportedly opened fire on the tourists when they were horse riding in the area.

Pahalgam attracts a large number of tourists every year.

Pulwama Attack

The terror attack in Pahalgam is one of the worst incidents recorded in the Valley, which was witnessing a spike in tourists in recent months, since the killing of 40 Indian Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)  personnel in 2019.
