West Bengal: Father, son hacked to death in Murshidabad as Waqf protest turns violent

At least two people have died amid the ongoing protest against the Waqf Amendment Act in West Bengal's Muslim-dominated Murshidabad district, media reports said on Saturday.


According to reports, the deceased people were identified as a father and his son.

They were reportedly hacked to death by a mob.

A father and son were hacked to death by a violent mob in the remote Jafrabad area on Saturday after the village came under attack, police sources told India Today.

Violent protests

Protests have swept across several districts including the Muslim-dominated Malda, Murshdiabad.

118 people have so far been arrested, police said.

Situation in Murshidabad is still tense after the protesters ransacked railway properties, torched houses causing displacement of the residents.

The incidents have been reported from Jangipur and Suti where police vehicles, bikes were torched, even leading cops to take refuge in local stores.

Not just in Murshidabad, the anti-Waqf protests also took place in the state capital Kolkata earlier this week.

In a deeply disturbing video which went viral on social media, a frenzy mob of Muslim people forced a bus driver to take down a saffron flag leaving the crowd cheering.

Mamata Banerjee's urges to maintain peace

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appealed to people to maintain "peace and harmony" as the Muslim-dominated Murshidabad district is on boil over the violent anti-Waqf Act protests.

In a long X post, Mamata has asked people to not behave in an inappropriate manner in the name of religion.

The Chief Minister has cleared her government won't implement the Waqf (Amendment) Act so asked Muslim people to refrain from rioting.

Her X post reads, "My sincere appeal to all people of all religions, please remain calm, remain restrained. Do not engage in any unrighteous behavior in the name of religion. Every human life is precious, do not incite riots for the sake of politics. Those who are inciting riots are harming the society.
