Will Robert Vadra take on Smriti Irani from Amethi? Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law stirs speculation
New Delhi/IBNS: As Congress top leader Rahul Gandhi is still unsure whether he will return to Amethi for a fight five years after he lost the seat, his brother-in-law Robert Vadra has started a speculation of him taking on Union Minister Smriti Irani from the constituency of Uttar Pradesh.
Robert, the husband of Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and son-in-law of Sonia Gandhi, visited the holy city of Vrindavan and prayed to Lord Banke Bihari.
Speaking to reporters, Robert said, "They (people of Amethi) want me to contest, represent them and make development. I will find solutions to their problems.
"No matter whether I am in politics or not, I will continue to keep working hard and a secular government in the country is in my thoughts."
In 2019, then Congress president Rahul Gandhi lost Amethi- which was the Gandhi family bastion- to Union Minister Smriti Irani, who is hailed as a "giant killer".
Rahul was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kerala's Wayanad constituency, the second seat from where he had contested in 2019.
Irani was, however, defeated by Rahul Gandhi in 2014, the year which saw Narendra Modi storming into power.
After praying to God, Robert ate "kachori" and distributed Thakurji's "prasad" to the devotees.
Uttar Pradesh, which has 80 Lok Sabha seats, has been ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 2017.
In the last consecutive general elections, the BJP had swept the polls in Uttar Pradesh, the north Indian state.
