Jaya Bachchan breaks the internet: Veteran actress says marriage is ‘outdated’ and doesn’t want granddaughter Navya to get wedded!
Mumbai/IBNS: Bollywood veteran Jaya Bachchan has stirred social media with her unconventional take on marriage during a recent show, calling the institution "outdated" and advising young women to "just enjoy life" without conforming to societal expectations.
Bachchan did not spare her own family from her views, openly admitting that she doesn’t want her entrepreneur granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda, to get married.
Speaking to journalist Barkha Dutt on Mojo Story, Bachchan said, "I don't want Navya to get married (smiles). It is an outdated institution."
When asked about advice for young women on raising children, she added, "I am a grandmother now while Navya is turning 28. I think I am too old to advise young girls today on raising children. Things have changed so much. The present generation's children are very smart."
She continued, "Just enjoy life! In our days, we were not used to getting our marriage registered immediately. We (Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan) signed our register several years into marriage, which means we were living 'illegally' (laughs)."
On her legendary actor husband Amitabh Bachchan's thoughts about marriage, she said she hadn’t asked him to avoid receiving a negative response:
"I have not asked him. He might say, 'biggest mistake of my life,' but I don't want to hear that. I have been married for 52 years to the same man!"
Jaya Bachchan’s remarks have been applauded by netizens, who usually troll her for her outbursts at paparazzi.
Explaining her relationship with the paparazzis, the actress, who made her film debut in Satyajit Ray's Mahanagar in 1963, said she respects journalism but not just anyone who clicks pictures and calls themselves a part of the media.
"My relationship with the media is fantastic. I am the product of the media, but my relationship with paparazzi is zero. Who are these people? Are they trained to represent the people of this country? You call them media? I come from the media. My father was a journalist. I have immense respect for such people."
She criticized paparazzi culture, saying, "But these people, wearing dirty drain-pipe type pants, think they can take our picture and say what they want because they have a mobile. And the kind of comments they pass! What kind of people are these? What kind of education and background do they have? Will they represent us just because they can get through to YouTube or social media handles?"
Bachchan also slammed new-generation actors who rely on paparazzi for staged social media content.
"What kind of celebrity are you if you need to call paparazzis to the airport to get pictures published?" she said, prompting cheers from the audience.
The 77-year-old was last seen in Karan Johar's Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles.
