Vijay’s Jana Nayagan release postponed days before theatrical debut
The much-anticipated release of actor Vijay’s Jana Nayagan has been officially postponed in India, just two days before its scheduled theatrical debut on January 9.
The announcement was made by the film’s production house, KVN Productions, citing “unavoidable circumstances beyond our control.”
Sharing the update on X, KVN Productions said the decision was taken with “a heavy heart,” acknowledging the anticipation surrounding the film.
The producers added that a new release date would be announced as soon as possible and appealed to audiences for their patience and continued support.
Ahimsa Entertainment, the film’s UK distributor, also confirmed that the overseas release has been postponed, signalling a wider impact beyond the Indian market.
This is not an easy post to make. #JanaNayagan has been postponed due to circumstances beyond our control. We’re truly very sorry — this hurts us as much as it hurts you. Please read our full statement below.

The delay comes amid an ongoing standoff over the film’s certification. On Wednesday, the Madras High Court reserved its order on the matter and directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to constitute a fresh committee to review the film.
The producers had moved the court after Jana Nayagan failed to receive its censor certificate despite being submitted more than a month ago, with the CBFC recommending cuts and muted dialogues on December 19.
With certification still pending, the India release plan has been pushed indefinitely, leaving fans awaiting further clarity.
As a result of the postponement, all January 9 screenings of Jana Nayagan have been cancelled.
Victory Cinema in Karnataka confirmed that all Friday shows have been called off, adding that online ticket bookings will be automatically refunded, while counter purchases can be refunded at the theatre from January 8 morning.

The setback has also affected the film’s global rollout. Distributors in the UK, North America, Canada and Malaysia have confirmed that the film will not release as planned.
Since CBFC clearance for the Tamil version is mandatory before approvals for the dubbed Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada versions, the certification issue has stalled the entire multilingual release strategy.
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan stars Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani and Narain.
Marketed as Vijay’s final film before his full-time entry into politics, the project now faces an uncertain wait, with audiences across countries hoping for a swift resolution and an early announcement of a new release date.
