In a significant conviction under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the Additional Sessions Judge of Dharmanagar under North Tripura district on Tuesday sentenced a Jammu & Kashmir resident to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for transporting a massive consignment of cannabis (Ganja) seized in North Tripura in 2022.
The convicted person, Manjoor Ahamed Chachi, son of Md. Jalal Uddin Chachi and a resident of Katyanwali in Baramulla district of Jammu & Kashmir, was also fined Rs. 1.5 lakh. In default of payment of the fine, he will have to undergo an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment. He was found guilty under Sections 20(B)(II)(C) and 29 of the NDPS Act in connection with Special (NDPS) Case No. 30/2022, arising out of Churaibari police station Case No. 02/2022.
According to the prosecution, the case dates back to February 1, 2022, when police were conducting a special vehicle checking drive at the Churaibari Naka point. During the operation, officers intercepted a truck and recovered 260 kilograms of dry Ganja concealed inside the vehicle. The truck driver, Manjoor Ahamed Chachi, was arrested on the spot.
Following a detailed investigation, Sub-Inspector (SI) Ajit Kanti Chakma, who was then posted at Churaibari police station and is now serving as an Inspector at Amtali police station under West Tripura district, submitted the charge sheet against the accused on July 31, 2022 last. After examining the evidence, the trial court found the accused guilty and awarded the sentence accordingly.
