Serious concerns have emerged over the security infrastructure in Dharmanagar, a key town in Tripura’s North District, following allegations that all 94 CCTV cameras installed across the town have remained non-functional for the past one to two months. The reported failure of the surveillance system comes amid a rise in theft and other criminal incidents, prompting questions about the effectiveness of the town’s security measures.
The CCTV cameras were installed at major intersections, markets, government offices, hospitals, and other busy public areas to strengthen surveillance and assist law enforcement. However, according to local sources, none of the cameras are currently operational.
Residents claim that the surveillance network has been out of service for the past one to two months, making it impossible to retrieve video footage following criminal incidents. This has reportedly created significant challenges for police investigations.
Allegations have also surfaced that despite repeated complaints to the authorities responsible for the municipal administration, no prompt action has been taken to restore the system. There are further claims that attempts have been made to place the blame on an employee responsible for monitoring the CCTV network.
During this period, residents say the town has witnessed an increase in thefts. Government offices, hospitals, commercial establishments, and even jewellery shops have reportedly been targeted, heightening concerns over public safety and law and order.
The situation has raised questions about the effectiveness of the surveillance project, with many residents asking who should be held accountable if a security system built at significant public expense remains non-functional.
Attempts were made to obtain a response from the concerned authorities regarding the allegations that the CCTV system has remained inoperative. However, no official clarification was available at the time of reporting.
Meanwhile, residents have urged the administration to restore the town’s surveillance network at the earliest. When the CCTV cameras will become operational again remains a major concern for the public.
