After the completion of all legal procedures, the body of missing youth Nityananda Malakar was finally brought back to India across the international border on Thursday. The handover process took place through the Manu Land Customs point in Kailashahar under Unakoti district.
Officials of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Bangladesh Police, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kailashahar police station Tapas Malakar, DCM Hemanta Dhar, and other officials were present during the handover. Family members of the deceased, including his elderly mother and brothers, were also present.
Nityananda Malakar, aged about 30 years old, was a resident of Durgapur area under Ward No. 15 of Kailashahar Municipal Council. He lived with his aged mother, four brothers, and sisters-in-law.
According to Nityananda’s elder brother, on May 9 last, two of his friends — Mantosh Malakar and Bijoy Namo — called him over the phone and took him away. Since then, Nityananda had been missing. After extensive searches failed to trace him, the family lodged a missing diary at Kailashahar police station.
Family members later questioned the two friends regarding Nityananda’s whereabouts, but they reportedly claimed to have no knowledge about him.
Two days later, through social media reports, the family came to know that the body of a young man had been recovered from the Manu River under Kulaura police station in Bangladesh. Based on the information, the family initially identified the body as that of Nityananda.
Subsequently, the identity was officially confirmed through legal procedures. On Thursday, following all formalities and in the presence of Bangladesh Police and Border Guard Bangladesh personnel, the body was handed over through Manu Land Customs station and brought to Kailashahar. Nityananda’s brothers and other family members identified the body upon its arrival.
OC Tapas Malakar stated that the body would be handed over to the family after post-mortem examination. The family members have demanded a proper investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, Nityananda’s elderly mother and other relatives broke down in tears following the arrival of his body.
