Border Golchakkar incident: Administration foils attempts to vitiate peaceful environment
AMC Mayor hold peace meeting with all communities, claim peace and harmony prevails
After Sunday night’s clashes between two groups at the Border Golchakkar area under West Agartala Police Station, a section of people with vested interests again attempted to disturb the peace on Monday afternoon. However, prompt and proactive action by the police and security forces foiled their efforts and restored normalcy.
Tension first erupted in the Border Golchakkar area on Sunday night when a group of miscreants allegedly abducted and assaulted a youth, triggering widespread panic, clashes, and vandalism. As the situation spiralled out of control, some locals began ransacking bikes, scooters, and shops while attacking others amid the chaos. Panic spread rapidly as residents struggled to identify who belonged to which group in the darkness.
According to reports, a miscreant named Arghajit Das, along with his associates, allegedly kidnapped another youth, Irfan Kazi, took him to a nearby shop, locked the door from inside, and brutally assaulted him. This incident triggered the group clashes and violence in the area.
Police immediately deployed additional forces on Sunday night and managed to bring the situation under control. However, on Monday afternoon, some individuals again attempted to create unrest by giving the incident a communal colour, but their efforts were thwarted by timely police intervention.
The West Agartala Police Station has arrested four accused persons in connection with Sunday night’s incident.
Meanwhile, local MLA and Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumder attended a peace meeting on Monday afternoon, where people from all communities participated to maintain harmony in the Golchakkar area.
Speaking to the media, Mayor Majumder said that Sunday’s incident stemmed from a personal dispute, and a section of people tried to exploit it to disturb peace. “Peace-loving people of all communities foiled their attempt,” he stated.
He added that people from both Hindu and Muslim communities have been living peacefully in the area with mutual respect and will not allow anyone to create disharmony. The Mayor further assured that the police administration will act impartially and bring all miscreants involved in the clashes to justice.
