Congress legal cell meets THRC chairman, demands investigation on human right violation cases

A delegation of 25 lawyers of Tripura Pradesh Congress’s Law, Human Rights and RTI Department of the Pradesh Congress Committee submitted a memorandum to the Chairman of the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) on various important issues such as the lack of proper investigation into various human rights violations in the state in the last seven and a half years.
Demanding identification of the culprits or stringent action against human right violations, the Congress representatives highlighted the reluctance of the state police stations to register proper FIRs in most cases of serious crimes against women, clashes, etc.
Later, speaking with media persons, Congress leader and advocate, Prasanta Sen Chowdhury alleged that in many cases, instead of accepting FIRs, police create pressure to settle cases of crimes against women including domestic violence through influential leaders of the local BJP Mandal.
Under pressure, sometimes even after registering an FIR, the police do not complete the investigation properly, and even when preparing the report, they try to give advantages to the accused, alleged Sen Chowdhury.
Highlighting the incidents including the burning of a young woman in broad daylight, the killing of a woman in a mob attack in various parts of the state, and the beating of a woman on charges of theft, not a single case of these incidents has led to the arrest of the accused or any legal action being taken against them or compensation being given, said Congress leader.
Expressing their serious concerns, Sen Chowdhury said that the investigation into the incidents of beatings in police stations lockups and deaths in correctional facilities in various parts of the state, including the West police station of Agartala, has not yet been completed, the culprits have not been identified and action has not been taken and compensation has not been provided.
Giving instances on many human right violation cases, Sen Chowdhury said that strict steps should be taken quickly to take legal action, otherwise the Congress will be forced to organize protests on the streets and, if necessary, join the legal battle.
