Efforts are reportedly being made to suppress the internal crisis unfolding within the Surjamaninagar Assembly constituency of Tripura. However, the sudden resignation of BJP Mandal president Manthu Debnath has pushed the area’s political instability to a critical stage.

For a long time, allegations of factionalism, organisational disorder, financial irregularities, and internal conflicts had been circulating within the political circles of the region. Though these issues were often dismissed publicly, many compared the situation to a “silent volcano” waiting to erupt. The abrupt resignation of Manthu Debnath, widely known as a trusted “right-hand man” of the local MLA Ramprasad Paul, has now brought those tensions into the open.

On Sunday, reportedly Manthu Debnath had submitted his resignation letter to the state BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee, describing him as “physically unwell.” However, insiders within the party claim that the real reasons behind the resignation are rooted not in health concerns, but in growing political and financial disputes.

According to sources, several controversial matters involving organisational management and financial dealings had created deep resentment within the party ranks. Allegations have also surfaced that large sums of money were siphoned off through various irregular activities. Following Debnath’s resignation, the party leadership quickly formed a 10-member committee to temporarily oversee the organisation and manage the emerging crisis.

Political observers believe the entire episode reflects a serious failure of leadership within the constituency. Despite presenting himself as a senior and influential leader of the party, MLA Ramprasad Paul has come under criticism for allegedly failing to maintain discipline and unity even within his own camp.
