A special programme was organised at the Sabroom Old Town Hall of South Tripura district on Thursday to commemorate the birth centenary of Cuban revolutionary leader and former head of state Fidel Castro. The event was observed with due respect and enthusiasm.
The main programme began on Thursday morning at the Sabroom Old Town Hall. Cuban Ambassador to India Juan Carlos Marsan Aguilera attended the event as the chief guest. CPI(M) Politburo member and leader of opposition, Jitendra Chaudhury, former MP Sankar Prasad Datta, Krishna Rakshit and several other CPI(M) leaders were also present.
At the outset, the guests and leaders present paid floral tributes to a portrait of Fidel Castro. The invited guests, including the Cuban Ambassador, were then formally welcomed. Speakers discussed Castro’s revolutionary life, political ideology and significant role in the history of Cuba.
The speakers’ said Fidel Castro was not only a revolutionary leader of Cuba but also a prominent figure in international politics. The political and social changes initiated by him through the Cuban Revolution had a lasting impact on world politics. His leadership, opposition to imperialism and struggle for the rights of ordinary people continue to be discussed in political and social spheres.
The long-standing friendly relations between India and Cuba also featured prominently during the programme. Speakers said such events play an important role in further strengthening mutual goodwill and friendship between the peoples of the two countries.
The presence of Cuban Ambassador Juan Carlos Marsan Aguilera generated considerable interest among political and cultural circles in Sabroom. A notable number of local residents and political workers and supporters attended the programme to see the Ambassador and hear his address.
The programme marking Fidel Castro’s birth centenary highlighted various aspects of his life and struggle while also recalling the historic bonds of friendship between India and Cuba. The event concluded with a tribute to the memory and legacy of Fidel Castro in Sabroom.
