Fifth kidney transplant successfully completed at GBP Hospital
With the sincere efforts of Chief Minister Prof. Dr Manik Saha, kidney transplant has become possible at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital.
After four successful kidney transplants in a row, the fifth kidney transplant was successfully performed at AGMC and GBP Hospital in the state on November 4, 2025. This time, a 32-year-old young man from Khowai district’s Kalyanpur underwent successful kidney transplant. A well-wisher of this young man donated one of his kidneys to him. The kidney transplant of this young man was successfully completed on November 4, 2025. Under the supervision of kidney transplant specialist doctors, Urologist Dr. Bijit Lodh, Dr. Mukut Debnath and Dr. Jiban Debnath, Nephrologist Dr. Manas Gop, Dr. Samaresh Pal, Dr. Udayan Saha and Dr. Reshmi were on behalf of AGMC and GBP Hospital in this process.
Urologist Dr. Soumyarendra Pawnam and Dr. Maharabam Mahale were on behalf of Shija Hospital, nephrologist Dr. Gulliver Potsangbam. Also, anesthetists from AGMC and GBP Hospital were Dr. Bhaskar Majumdar, Dr. Chirasri Chowdhury and Dr. Tapan Debbarma and from Shija Hospital, Dr. Anand Nagom and Dr. Apollo Khundakpam. The kidney transplant process was completely supervised by Senior Nursing Officer-in-Charge of GBP Hospital, Tapati Chakraborty. Currently, both the donor and the recipient are under the observation of specialist doctors.
It may be recalled here that the first kidney transplant process in the state started on July 8, 2024 last year. GBP Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Shankar Chakraborty informed about the kidney transplant process that the decision to transplant a kidney is taken based on the consideration of the authorization committee and the issuance of permission in accordance with specific rules and regulations. Moreover, the ancillary other tests and examinations must be done to ensure that the donor and recipient kidneys are matched. This news has been informed by the Health Department.
