Four free Cochlear implant surgeries successfully conducted at GB Pant Hospital in Agartala
The ENT Department of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) & GBP Hospital successfully performed four cochlear implant surgeries over two days (March 20 and 21), marking a significant milestone in advanced healthcare services in Tripura.
The surgeries were carried out on children who had been deaf since early childhood, offering them a life-changing opportunity to experience sound for the first time. All four patients belong to economically disadvantaged families from different parts of the state.
In a notable step towards inclusive healthcare, the procedures were conducted completely free of cost, ensuring that financial constraints did not hinder access to critical treatment. The initiative was made possible through the joint support of the Government of Tripura and the National Health Mission.
A dedicated team of ENT specialists carried out the surgeries with precision and care, leading to successful outcomes. Cochlear implant surgery is an advanced medical intervention that can significantly transform the lives of children with severe hearing impairment, improving their ability to hear, develop speech, and lead a normal life.
Such early interventions play a crucial role in the development of language and communication skills. The initiative reflects the state’s commitment to providing equitable and accessible healthcare services.
The surgeries were part of a special programme conducted during the 9th Surgical Workshop and Cochlear Implant Continuing Medical Education (CME) event organized by the ENT (Head and Neck Surgery) Department of the institution. This marks a historic achievement, as such a large-scale cochlear implant programme had not been conducted simultaneously for multiple patients in the region before.
Health Secretary Kiran Gitte attended the event and highlighted the importance of the initiative, praising the efforts of all those involved. He expressed confidence that such efforts would continue to strengthen healthcare delivery in the state.
The inaugural programme was held at the Lecture Hall of the medical college, with the presence of renowned ENT specialist Amitabha Ray Chaudhuri, along with senior officials and medical experts including H P Sharma, Tapan Majumdar, Bidhan Goswami, Biplab Nath, Shankar Chakraborty, and Shouvik Debbarma. The workshop was coordinated by organizing secretary Dr. Bagdatta Pal.
The initiative has brought renewed hope to the families involved, opening up new possibilities for the children to hear, speak, and integrate fully into society.
