Mysterious death of woman labourer at brick kiln in Jatrapur
A woman labourer was found dead under mysterious circumstances at a brick kiln in Kalikhola ADC Village under Jatrabari police station of Sepahijala district on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Swapna Tikka (22). Her husband, Jagannath Kujur (24), is also a labourer at the same brick kiln. Both hail from Jharkhand and were working there as migrant labourers, locally known as “Ranchi labourers.”
The incident took place at the BMI brick kiln located in Kalikhola ADC Village. The manager of the brick kiln Sanjay Naha and three owners — MD Kamal Hossain, Rajesh Debnath, and Nazrul Islam rushed to the spot after the incident was reported.
According to sources, a total of 85 labourers work at the brick kiln, of whom 52 are migrant labourers from Jharkhand, including both men and women.
Brick kiln manager Sanjay Naha stated that early in the morning, as daylight broke, all labourers left their temporary shelters to begin work. However, Swapna Tikka did not come out. After a long wait, other women labourers began searching for her and discovered that the door of her room was closed from inside. Upon breaking open the wooden door, they found Swapna hanging from an iron rod attached to the roof with a white nylon rope.
Following the incident, several labourers began screaming, and soon others gathered at the spot, abandoning their work.
The brick kiln manager and owners immediately informed Jatrabari police station and police reached the spot, collected necessary information, and recovered the body. The body was later sent to Kathalia Social Health Centre, where police conducted a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
The incident has raised serious concern, as cases of unnatural deaths have been registered at the police station and police started investigation to unearth the reason of the death.
