NIT, Agartala student drowns in Dumboor lake during outing
A tragic incident occurred at the popular tourist destination of Dumboor Lake in Tripura, where an engineering student drowned while bathing.
The deceased has been identified as Abhinav Singh (20), a second-year student of NIT Agartala and a resident of Uttar Pradesh.
Sources said that Abhinav, along with four friends, had gone on a trip and stayed at a resort in the Narikelkunj area on Friday night.
On Saturday afternoon, they went to the helipad area near the lake for a bath. During this time, Abhinav entered the water and suddenly drowned. Locals immediately rushed to rescue him, but due to the excessive depth of the water, his body could not be found initially.
After receiving the information, fire service personnel from Gandacherra and Ambassa rushed to the spot. Later, an SDRF team arrived and launched a rescue operation. On Saturday evening, Abhinav Singh’s body was recovered. The body has been kept at Gandacherra morgue.
Local residents stated that similar incidents have occurred multiple times in Dumboor Lake, especially in the Narikelkunj area, due to deep waters, lack of proper warning signboards, and inadequate safety measures. Despite repeated accidents, locals alleged that no effective steps have been taken by the authorities.
The incident has triggered strong reactions among residents. As the victim was a student of NIT Agartala, a shadow of grief has fallen over the campus. His family members are reportedly on their way to Tripura.
Following the tragic incident, demands have been raised for immediate administrative intervention and the implementation of proper safety measures in the area.
