A Pakistani woman who was arrested from Sabroom Railway Station in South Tripura last year has been sentenced to two years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000 by the Sabroom Court.
The verdict was delivered at around 2 p.m. on Monday. The convict has been identified as Louise Nigat Arthur Bhanu (65), a resident of Lahore, Pakistan.
According to reports, she was arrested from Sabroom Railway Station at around 9 p.m. on October 11, 2025, after allegedly entering India without valid travel documents.
It was further reported that Bhanu had previously been imprisoned in Kathmandu, Nepal, in connection with a drug trafficking case. Sources claimed that she was arrested by Kathmandu Metropolitan Police on June 6, 2014, along with another woman, after a large quantity of cocaine was seized. The narcotics were allegedly being trafficked from Pakistan to Nigeria via Nepal. She was reportedly sentenced to 15 years in prison by a Nepalese court.
The report further alleged that Bhanu escaped from Kathmandu prison on September 10, 2025, during unrest in Nepal when several inmates reportedly fled the jail. She is said to have entered India illegally and stayed in Bihar before travelling through Siliguri on the Kanchanjunga Express to Sabroom, allegedly with the intention of crossing into Bangladesh.
The case has also raised questions over border security and internal surveillance, as the woman reportedly travelled through several Indian states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, before reaching Tripura without being detected by security agencies. Investigators also reportedly recovered several mobile phone numbers from her possession.
Following the examination of witnesses and completion of the trial, the Sabroom Court convicted Bhanu and sentenced her to two years’ imprisonment along with a fine of Rs10,000.
