Police detain over speeding car on NH-8; Recover 94 kg dry Ganja
Chief Minister appreciates swift action
In a major anti-narcotics operation, Tripura Police intercepted an over speeding private car on National Highway-8 near Choumohani Bazar under Amtali police station on Tuesday evening and recovered a large quantity of dry Cannabis (Ganja). One suspected smuggler has been arrested.
Following the significant seizure, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha lauded the police force. In a message shared on social media, he wrote: “Another successful drive against narcotics! Amtali PS intercepted an over speeding vehicle and recovered approximately 94 kg of dry ganja from the vehicle at Chowmuhani Bazar on NH-08, in the presence of SDPO Amtali. One person has been arrested. Kudos to the team for their vigilance and swift action. Our fight against drugs continues…”
Providing further details, SDPO (Amtali) Paramita Pandey said the police team was conducting naka checking when they noticed a private car speeding towards Bishalgarh from Agartala. The driver ignored the police signal and attempted to flee at high speed.
Immediately, the police initiated a chase. During the pursuit, the SP (Anti-Narcotics) shared crucial intelligence and confirmed the registration number of the vehicle, directing the police team to detain it as it was suspected of carrying narcotics.
The car, bearing registration number TR-01-BW-0515, was finally intercepted at Choumohani Bazar. During the search operation, the police recovered 94 kilograms of dry ganja from the vehicle.
Police arrested the driver and alleged smuggler, Akash Barman, a resident of Konaban under Madhupur Police Station in Sepahijala district.
A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered. The police have begun a detailed investigation to trace the source of the seized contraband and identify the wider network involved in the smuggling operation.
