After a police raid at a home stay in the Haradhan Sangha area of Agartala on Valentine’s Night, which has sparked massive controversy across the city, the local demands stringent action against accused persons to check such kind of immoral trafficking in different parts of the state.
It may be recalled here that acting on a complaint from local youths associated with a club, the police detained several young men and women, alleging prostitution activities in that apartment on Valentine Day.
According to the complainants, the alleged activities were disturbing the peace of the locality. However, the home stay owner, Sanghamitra Dey, denied the allegations, stating that their establishment does not rent rooms to minors. She said that bookings are done online, and proper documents are collected before room allotment.
Sanghamitra Dey also mentioned that her son, Anirban Dey, an IT engineer currently based in Kolkata and formerly residing in London, manages the home stay through online bookings. She added that the establishment has 13 rooms, of which three are available for online booking, while the rest are occupied by permanent residents. She insisted that all operations comply with government regulations. The incident has raised debates over privacy, business regulations, and law enforcement intervention in home stays across the city.
While members of the club and local people alleged that in the name of home stay, a section of people ran a prostitution racket and often they rented their room to minor students with high rent. They also alleged that these home stay rooms have also been used for drug networks and they noticed young people often indulge in clashes near the apartment.
The locals also demanded stringent police action against such illegal activities.
Meanwhile, West Agartala women police have said that during the raid on Friday midnight at ‘Lake View’ apartment in Haradhan Sangha area of the city, they have detained 4 girls and started investigation over an alleged prostitution racket.
