Road connectivity between Assam and Tripura severely disrupted amid rains; NH-8 turns hazardous at Lowerpoa stretch
Heavy rains have thrown road connectivity between Assam and Tripura into disarray, with the condition of National Highway 8 at the Lowerpoa stretch becoming extremely dangerous.
The Assam–Agartala national highway, which is known as NH-8 has effectively turned into a death trap, as large trucks continue to get stuck, leading to hours-long traffic congestion. Allegations of negligence by the construction agency have added to the severe hardships faced by the public.
During the ongoing Monsoon season, this crucial highway connecting the two states has remained in a dilapidated condition for a prolonged period, severely disrupting transportation. Passengers, drivers, and pedestrians are being forced to risk their lives while commuting daily.
On Friday afternoon, a 16-wheeler heavy vehicle got badly stuck on the highway at the Lowerpoa area, triggering massive traffic snarls on both ends of the road. Nearly 200 vehicles remained stranded for hours. Locals alleged that even after nearly two hours, no responsible official from the construction company was present at the site, sparking outrage among residents and drivers.
Sources revealed that due to ongoing work under the Bharatmala Project at the Lowairpoa–Hatikhira bypass, the main road has been completely closed. As a result, heavy vehicles are being diverted through the narrow and fragile road passing via the Lowairpoa Market area. The excessive pressure has quickly deteriorated this alternative route.
Local residents claim that the construction agency had earlier promised prompt repairs of the damaged road, but no visible progress has been made. Instead, they alleged a continued lack of accountability in addressing the crisis.
A pressing question now remains: how will the stranded vehicles be rescued from this dangerous stretch, and when will normal traffic movement be restored? The public continues to wait for answers.
