Senior BJP MLA Rampada Jamatia proposed as new Speaker of Tripura Legislative Assembly
Senior tribal leader and BJP MLA Rampada Jamatia has been proposed as the new Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly.
The proposal was made by BJP legislators during a pre-Assembly meeting held at the official residence of Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Thursday evening.
Official sources said that the new Speaker is expected to take oath on March 18.
The Speaker’s post had been vacant following the demise of Biswa Bandhu Sen, a senior politician and MLA from Dharmanaga assembly constituency on December 26 last year.
Jamatia, a former leader of the Jamatia Hoda, will become the second Speaker from the tribal community in the state after Communist leader Sudhanva Debbarma.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, Deputy Speaker, Chief Whip Kalyani Roy and other legislators from the Bharatiya Janata Party, Tipra Motha Party and Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) greeted Jamatia after the meeting.
After the meeting Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha through his social media post said that “Today, in the meeting of the Legislative Party, the name of Shri Rampad Jamatia has been proposed as the Speaker. I firmly believe that his long political experience, dedication and leadership will be helpful in making the functioning of the Legislative Assembly more strong and effective in the coming days.On my personal behalf, I wish him sincere greetings and success.”
Meanwhile, the Budget Session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly is scheduled to begin on Friday, and the state budget will be presented by Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy on March 16 next.
