Sound pollution: DJ sound boxes seized by City police

At a time when the entire globe is protecting the environment to raise awareness of people about rapidly deteriorating environmental hazards like air pollution and noise pollution, Tripura seems to be moving blissfully along its own way. Tripura also observed the world environment day along with the rest of India or globe but the level of consciousness of people here about the threats they face leaves a lot to be desired.

Specially, the sound pollution becomes a threat for cities and rural areas and when the High Court of Tripura instructed the government to prevent the spread of noise from loudspeakers, music speakers, generators, and blasting crackers, rampant violation continues during the immersion festival.

The Tripura High Court issued directives on September 25, 2024 to the State government to enforce rules to contain air pollution during festival days. The court advised the government to adhere to laws and previous orders from the court regarding noise levels. Since then, playing high-volume DJ sound systems in any kind of festival or ceremony totally banned across Tripura,

After the ‘Ganesh Chaturthi’ festival, the immersion of Lord Ganesha starts on Thursday and the people of Agartala city are witnessing the heavy sound of DJ boxes.

While the city police have intensified their surveillance over violation of HC directives and acting to check the sound pollution, the West Agartala police station has seized high volume sound systems (DJ Box) during immersion of Lord Ganesha from Dashamighat immersion point.

On Friday also many immersions are going on across the city and police continue their vigilance to control sound pollution.

While speaking with media persons, OC of West Agartala police station, Rana Chatterjee said that they have already seized one big sound system with a carrying vehicle and have taken lawful steps for violation of High Court directive.

He added that whenever police notice any violation of High Court directive, then they will take legal action as per law. He also urged the Puja organizers and citizens of the state capital to maintain all rules and regulations to control sound pollution during festival days.
