Tension erupts in Bijaynagar during anti-Ganja operation
At least 20 injured, including women; one youth critically hurt
Tension erupted in the Bijaynagar tribal area under Sonamura police station of Sepahijala district on Friday morning during an anti-Ganja operation conducted by police and TSR personnel.
According to local sources, a large police team led by Sonamura police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tapash Das, along with TSR forces, entered the area to destroy illegal cannabis plantations. During the operation, several local women reportedly gathered near the Ganja fields to watch the proceedings.
Allegations have surfaced that, following instructions from the operation-in-charge, police personnel began lathi-charg the unarmed women without provocation. The sudden assault triggered panic, and chaos broke out in the area, leading to a complete breakdown of order.
Residents reported that at least 20 women sustained injuries, suffering swelling and bruises in different parts of their bodies due to the lathi-charge. Additionally, a tribal youth sustained a severe head injury and began bleeding profusely. He was first taken to Kamalnagar Health Centre and later shifted to Melaghar Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
The incident has sparked widespread anger in the Bijaynagar tribal community. Locals alleged that innocent villagers were beaten without reason under the pretext of an anti-Ganja drive. They are demanding an impartial investigation and strict action against the police personnel responsible.
So far, the higher police authorities have not issued any official statement regarding the incident.
