Several Northeastern states including Tripura would witness moderate to very heavy rainfall for four days from Saturday due to a severe cyclonic storm after a depression over central Bay of Bengal, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.

The Revenue department of Tripura government and  the Agartala station of India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an advisory on Friday evening and said that the depression over central Bay of Bengal has moved north-northeastwards, which is likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm by May 25th morning. Subsequently, it would move nearly northwards and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by May 26th night. Continuing to move nearly northwards, it is very likely to cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara around May 26th midnight as a severe cyclonic storm with wind speed of 110-120 gusting 130 kmph.

The advisory said that under the influence of the cyclonic storm, an increase in rainfall actively accompanied with heavy rainfall and gusty wind at isolated places is to occur over Tripura during May 25 to 28.

The IMD has issued a ‘yellow’ warning for May 25 and said that thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind speed reaching 30 to 40 kmph is very likely to occur across all districts of Tripura.

For May 26, IMD issued ‘orange’ alert with thunderstorm lightning and gusty wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places over South, Gomati, Dhalai, Sepahijala and West Tripura districts. ‘Orange’ warning for other districts of Tripura.

For May 27, IMD has issued ‘orange’ alert and predicted for thunderstorm with lightning and squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting 70 kmph with heavy to very heavy rainfall for all districts of Tripura.

Similarly, IMD has also issued an ‘orange’ alert for May 28 for all districts of Tripura and predicted the same thunderstorm and heavy to very heavy rain falls.

The IMD said that light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely to occur in Mizoram, Tripura,Manipur, Assam,Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland on May 26 to 28.

Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Assam and Meghalaya on May 27 and 28, Mizoram and Tripura on May 27 and Arunachal Pradesh on May 28, an IMD statement said.

While, the Revenue department through a press statement said that the government is monitoring the situation and coordinating with IMD for further developments of the cyclonic storm and standby all disaster management forces including NDRF, SDRF , TSR and firefighters.
