Tripura power consumers to benefit from promising joint research initiative by TSECL & Dhalai District Polytechnic

A brighter and more reliable future awaits power consumers in Tripura as the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) takes a significant step toward transforming the state's power distribution system. In collaboration with Dhalai District Polytechnic, Ambassa, TSECL has submitted a joint research proposal to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) under its Research Promotion Scheme (RPS - Lab to Market).
If approved, the project is expected to bring direct benefits to electricity consumers in Tripura by addressing long-standing issues such as low voltage, supply disruptions, and lack of real-time system visibility. Consumers will enjoy more stable and uninterrupted power supply, and will be empowered with app- and web-based tools to monitor electricity status in real time—a move towards greater transparency and consumer awareness.
Titled “Techno-Economic Deployment of DG and VAR Devices in Mutually Coupled Unbalanced Active Distribution Networks (ADNs) with App/Web-Based Monitoring,” the proposed research focuses on modernizing power distribution, reducing technical losses, improving voltage profiles, and integrating renewable energy—particularly solar power—to foster sustainable energy solutions. Direct Benefits for Consumers: Enhanced power reliability with reduced outages and voltage fluctuations. Improved voltage stability in underserved areas. Real-time mobile/web monitoring to empower consumers with system awareness. Reduced dependency on the central grid through decentralized solar integration. Increased efficiency and transparency in power distribution through digital oversight.
The proposed three-year research initiative, scheduled from November 2025 to October 2028, includes:
Development of optimized strategies for deploying Distributed Generation (DG) and reactive power (VAR) devices.
Establishment of a 3-4 bus prototype system at the Dhalai Polytechnic campus with solar integration at the 440 Volt level. Real-time data collection from a selected 11 kV feeder under TSECL. Design and implementation of an app- and web-based monitoring platform.
The project will be led by Dr. Sanat Kumar Paul, Head of the Electrical Engineering Department at Dhalai District Polytechnic, and Mr. Swapan Debbarma, General Manager (Technical), TSECL.
In an official statement, TSECL emphasized that the project is not only a leap toward technological advancement but also a crucial step in addressing climate change and promoting environmental sustainability. The integration of solar energy and focus on decentralized generation mark a strategic push toward a cleaner, greener energy landscape in Tripura.
TSECL further stated that this applied and industry-focused collaboration between a state-run technical institute and the power utility reflects a practical model for future-ready, sustainable electricity infrastructure in the state. The corporation remains hopeful of receiving AICTE’s final approval and has expressed its commitment to supporting similar R&D collaborations in the future.
This research initiative is expected to be a milestone in improving Tripura’s power sector—combining consumer benefits, advanced technology, environmental protection, and digital transformation. All eyes are now on AICTE’s decision, which could unlock a new chapter in the state's energy journey.
