In a successful operation, the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Badarpur Railway Station in Assam arrested a youth from Tripura for allegedly carrying gold biscuits worth approximately Rs 80 lakh.

According to GRP sources, the accused was travelling from Agartala to Guwahati on the Deoghar Express when he was intercepted during a routine checking operation at Badarpur Railway Station. Acting on specific inputs, GRP personnel conducted a search of suspected passengers and their belongings.

During the checking, the police detained a youth identified as Abhijit Debnath, a resident of Hari Chowdhury village in Ranirbazar under West Tripura district. Upon searching his bag, the GRP recovered five gold biscuits weighing 584.04 grams, valued at around Rs 80 lakh.

GRP officials stated that preliminary investigation suggests the accused was allegedly involved in gold smuggling activities and had earlier transported gold from Agartala to Guwahati through various surface routes.

The arrested youth is currently being interrogated, and an inter-state investigation has been initiated to trace the wider gold smuggling network, police sources added. Further investigation is underway.
