TSECL - GIZ training programme strengthens solar workforce with advanced technology
In a significant step towards strengthening the implementation of the ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’ in Tripura, a two-day specialized solar training programme was jointly organized by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) and the internationally reputed German development agency GIZ. The workshop was held at the TSECL auditorium and saw the participation of 56 solar vendors and billing supervisors from across the state.
The objective of the programme was not limited to routine skill enhancement. It was designed to ensure that the benefits of the ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’ reach households in a reliable, safe and long-lasting manner, while maintaining strict quality standards in rooftop solar installations. By involving GIZ, an organization globally recognized for its work in renewable energy and technical capacity building, the training gained both credibility and technical depth.
GIZ has been playing a crucial role in India’s renewable energy transition for several years by introducing modern technologies, international best practices and structured training models. The same global expertise was brought to Tripura, offering hands-on exposure to advanced solar installation techniques. Participants were trained in scientifically tested methods of installing rooftop solar panels on concrete roofs, tin sheds and open spaces, ensuring maximum efficiency, safety and durability.
The training covered the use of modern installation tools, advanced design and assessment software, and internationally accepted safety protocols. Special focus was given to grid-connected and hybrid photovoltaic systems, including system design, installation, operation and maintenance. These technical inputs are expected to significantly reduce installation errors, improve system lifespan and enhance customer satisfaction.
Participants, including experienced vendors and technicians, shared that the workshop helped them upgrade their technical understanding well beyond their previous field experience. The training improved not only their practical skills but also their confidence in handling complex installations. The direct beneficiaries of this up skilling initiative will be electricity consumers, who can now expect safer, more durable and cost-effective solar installations with lower maintenance requirements.
It is noteworthy that GIZ has successfully implemented several flagship initiatives such as the ‘Suryamitra’ skilling programme, the iRISE project, and the Indo-German Solar Partnership in different parts of the country. These initiatives have played a vital role in creating a skilled solar workforce and promoting rooftop solar adoption. The Tripura training programme aligns with this broader national vision and adds momentum to the state’s clean and green energy goals.
Speaking on the occasion, TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu urged electricity consumers to enroll under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. He highlighted that with well-trained technicians and improved service quality, consumers can confidently adopt rooftop solar systems. He added that the scheme enables households to reduce their electricity bills to zero and earn additional income by selling surplus power back to the grid.
Overall, the collaboration between TSECL and GIZ reflects a strong commitment to quality-driven renewable energy development. The involvement of an international agency like GIZ not only enhances the technical standards of solar installations in Tripura but also reinforces public trust in the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, making it a sustainable and economically attractive option for the people of the state.
