A special court has sentenced two persons to five years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each in a Ganja smuggling case under North Tripura district.
The convicts have been identified as Joyhari Lal Chakma, a resident of Damcherra, and Bikash Chakma, a resident of Talukdarpara in Pecharthal under NorthTripura district.
Giving details Public Prosecutor Dhruba Goswami said that the incident took place on the evening of March 23, 2022, when police intercepted an Alto car during routine checking at the Rishipara Naka point on the Damcherra-Khedacherra road.
During the search, police recovered around 15 bundles of ganja from the rear boot of the vehicle. A case was subsequently registered at Damcherra police station. The case, numbered NDPS 40/2022, was later tried before the Special Court.
After examining a total of eight witnesses during the trial, the court found both accused guilty and sentenced each of them to five years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 25,000.
North Tripura District Police also praised the professionalism and thorough investigation conducted by the Investigating Officer, Inspector Lazarus Lalmodika Darlong. At the time of the investigation, he was posted as an SI (UB) at Damcherra police station. He is currently serving under Unakoti District Police.
The police administration said it would continue to take stringent measures to curb drug trafficking and ensure that those involved in such offences are brought to justice.
