A series of motorcycle thefts in Udaipur Subdivision under Gomati district had sparked concern among residents in recent weeks.
However, police have achieved a significant breakthrough by recovering two stolen motorcycles, although the bike lifters involved in the thefts are yet to be arrested.
Police sources said that a KTM motorcycle bearing registration number TR01AZ-7509 was stolen from the Udaipur Police Line area on April 21. The very next day, a Pulsar motorcycle with registration number TR01J-9932 was stolen from the Phulkumari area of Udaipur.
Following the incidents, the owners of both vehicles lodged written complaints with the RK Pur police station and based on the complaints, police formed a special investigation team to trace the stolen motorcycles and identify the responsible bike lifters.
As the investigation progressed, police successfully recovered the KTM motorcycle on April 31 with assistance from Killa police station of the district. On the same day, during a routine night patrol operation, police also recovered the stolen Pulsar motorcycle from the Dhajanagar area of Udaipru.
Despite recovering both vehicles, police have not yet been able to arrest the main accused involved in the thefts. Investigations are continuing to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The recovered motorcycles were formally handed over to their rightful owners during a press conference held at RK Pur police on Wednesday. The event was attended by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Debanjali Roy, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sanjib Laskar, and Sub-Inspector (SI) Debanjan Majumdar.
In a separate incident, police arrested two individuals for allegedly transporting stolen stone chips illegally. Acting on information provided by journalists on April 30, police intercepted a Bolero vehicle along the Agartala-Udaipur National Highway near Tepania.
The vehicle, bearing registration number TR03K1896, was found carrying suspected stolen stone chips. Police detained two individuals identified as Jangsu Miha and Suman Miah and brought them to Radhakishorepur Police Station for questioning.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the duo may be linked to a theft racket, police said. Further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
While the recent rise in theft-related incidents has caused concern among residents of Udaipur Subdivision, locals believe that the proactive efforts of the police in recovering stolen property and taking action against suspected offenders have provided some reassurance.
