Two temples in Jolaibari under South Tripura district were targeted by burglars on the same night, triggering concern among local residents over the rising number of thefts in the area.
Local sources said that unidentified miscreants broke open the donation boxes at the Shani Temple, managed by the Jolaibari Market Traders’ Association, and a Kali Temple in West Jolaibari on Saturday night, and stole the cash kept inside.
CCTV footage from a nearby shop at the Shani Temple premises reportedly shows two tribal youths allegedly carrying out the theft. The footage is expected to aid the police investigation.
After learning about the incidents on Sunday morning, local residents informed the Jolaibari police outpost. Police personnel visited both locations, inspected the crime scenes, and initiated an investigation.
Meanwhile, some local residents alleged that incidents of theft have been increasing in the area and expressed dissatisfaction over policing. They also levelled allegations against the Officer-in-Charge of the Jolaibari outpost, claiming that inadequate action against thieves and drug traffickers has contributed to the rise in crime. These allegations have not been independently verified, and there has been no official response from the police regarding the claims.
Residents have urged the police administration to identify and arrest those responsible for the thefts and take effective measures to curb criminal activities in the area.
