Under-trial prisoner died on way to hospital, sparks tension, massive protest at NCC police station

Large number local people of Goyala Basti area of Agartala gheraoed the New Capital Complex (NCC) police station demanding justice for an under trial prisoner and innocent father, who was on way to hospital from Central jail died in an ambulance on Sunday booked.
Amidst massive uproar, large number local people including women of Goyala Basti area staged massive demonstration in the NCC police station complex after death of one Kailash Roy (60) on way to hospital from central jail on Sunday, who was put into jail custody instead of his son for six days ago for a criminal offence allegedly by the officer-in-charge (OC) of police station.
Sources said about six days, Kailash Roy was arrested by NCC police station after his son, Manjoy Roy (24) escaped from his residence to evade police arrest. But, police without any offence arrested sexagenarian Kailash Roy and put him in jail custody.
Sources added that Kailash Roy, a poor and unwell man on Sunday complained of severe illness, then an ambulance from central jail tried to shift him to Bishalgarh sub divisional hospital, but on the way to hospital he succumbed due to his critical illness.
A police official said that doctors declared him brought dead upon arrival at the hospital and in absence of his family, police shifted his body to GB Hospital morgue for autopsy. Soon after the report of his death, a large number of people including his neighbours and relatives gheraoed the police station.
Agitated people demanded that his body be returned to them in the same condition in which he was taken into the police custody and they refused to accept the dead body.
Agitated locals alleged that police was unable to arrest Manjoy Roy, but they arrested his father illegally and assured the villagers that accused Manjoy surrendered before police, then they would release his father unconditionally.
They also complained that a couple days ago, suspected accused Manjoy surrendered before police, police did not keep their word and did not release his father, who was put in jail custody.
Amidst, massive protest, senior police officials rushed to NCC police station and they assured the agitated villagers, an investigation had been initiated and police administration after post-mortem of Kailash Roy, his mortal remains were handed over to his relative for last rites.
