Canada: 21-year-old Indian student dies after stray bullet hits her in Hamilton

An Indian student died after a stray bullet hit her when she was waiting at a bus stop in the Canadian port city of Hamilton recently.


The deceased Indian student was identified as 21-year-old Harsimrat Randhawa.

She was studying in Mohawk College in Hamilton.

The Hamilton Police have started investigating the case.

The police described her as an ' innocent bystander'.

Police said in a statement: "Hamilton Police are investigating after an innocent bystander was tragically killed by a stray bullet while standing at a bus stop on Upper James in #HamOnt."

The victim was rushed to a hospital after she was hit by a bullet, where she died.

The police further wrote on X: "Hamilton Police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred earlier this evening in the area of Upper James and Mohawk. An adult female was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. At this time, there is no suspect or vehicle description. The investigation is in its early stages—more details will be shared as they become available."

Police told CBC that investigators, after reviewing video, have determined that a passenger in a black Mercedes SUV fired at people in a white sedan.

Shortly after the shooting, the white sedan headed north on Upper James Street while the Mercedes went west on South Bend Road, police said.

Mohawk College Mourns

The college authority, meanwhile, issued a statement to express its sadness over the death of the student.

"Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time," the college said in the statement as quoted by CBC.

"As a member of the Mohawk College community, we know this loss is being felt by many and we will do everything we can to support Harsimrat's friends, family and the broader college community," the statement said.

Indian Consulate Reacts

The Indian Consulate in Toronto said it is maintaining close contact with the victim's family and extending all necessary assistance to them.
