Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the chief of the regular Sudanese army, had expressed his support for a seven-day ceasefire that was declared by South Sudan on Wednesday.

In the early hours of Friday, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces announced that they were prolonging a previous truce, which had been negotiated under the auspices of the US-Saudi mediation, by an additional three days.

Despite numerous agreements on truces since the outbreak of hostilities between the rival security forces on April 15th, none of them have been observed.
