Ex-US Attorney Jessica Aber, who resigned after Donald Trump's inauguration, found dead in Alexandria residence
Former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Jessica Aber, who quit after President Donald Trump assumed office for his second term, was found dead at her residence in Alexandria, Virginia, on Saturday.
She was 43.
Alexandria Police Department said an investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances that led to her death.
"This morning, at approximately 9:18 am, Alexandria Police responded to the 900 block of Beverley Drive for the report of an unresponsive woman. Officers located a deceased woman," police said in a statement.
The police said The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia will determine the cause and manner of her death.
Jessica Aber
U.S. Attorney Aber was nominated by former President Joe Biden on August 10, 2021 and unanimously confirmed by the Senate on October 5, 2021 for the position of United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.
According to the US Department of Justice website, Aber began her service to EDVA in 2009 as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, taking on a variety of financial fraud, public corruption, violent crime, and child exploitation cases.
From 2015 to 2016, she served on a detailed assignment as counsel to the Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice. Since 2016, Ms. Aber has served as the Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division for EDVA.
Aber received the Assistant Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service from the Department of Justice in 2019.
Prior to joining the Department of Justice, Aber was an associate at McGuireWoods LLP from 2007 to 2008. She served as a law clerk for then-Magistrate Judge M. Hannah Lauck on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia from 2006 to 2007.
Reactions
Attorney General Pamela Bondi described Aber's death as 'tragic'.
Bondi said in a statement, "The loss of Jessica Aber, former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, is deeply tragic. Our hearts and prayers go out to her family and friends during this profoundly difficult time.”
US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Erik S Siebert, said Aber's death left him 'heartbroken'.
"We are heartbroken beyond words to learn of the passing of our friend and former colleague, U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber. She was unmatched as a leader, mentor, and prosecutor, and she is simply irreplaceable as a human being," he said.
He said: "We remain committed to her life’s work, a commitment to seeking justice, as she would have wanted."
