Gaza ceasefire: Eight hostages due to be released in first phase of deal are dead, says Israel

By IBNS
Jan 28, 2025..

Israel has confirmed that eight of the remaining 26 hostages, who are scheduled to be released by Hamas in the ongoing phase of the Gaza truce, are dead, media reports said.

Israel government spokesman David Mencer said the country received the list from Hamas that provided information about the status of the hostages held as captive by them since October 7, 2023.

"The list from Hamas matches Israel's intelligence, so I can share with you that... eight have been killed by Hamas," he was quoted as saying by BBC.

"The families have been informed of the situation of their relatives," David Mencer said.

However, details about the hostage have not been revealed so far.

Hamas have released seven hostages so far since the truce began on January 19.

290 Palestinian prisoners have been freed from Israeli prison during this period.

Israel on Sunday said Hamas will release six hostages in two batches this week which will also include civilian Arbel Yehud and soldier Agam Berger.

Israel announced the dispute over the implementation of the ceasefire and the hostage dispute has been resolved.

Jerusalem also said Hamas had finally sent a list detailing the conditions of the remaining hostages set to be released in the ongoing, 42-day first phase of the ceasefire, which began on January 19, reported The Times of Israel.

Apart from failing to send the list on Saturday, Hamas did not release Yehud ahead of IDF servicewomen which Israel regarded as a violation of the ceasefire deal.

With the differences resolved now, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the military would allow hundreds of thousands of displaced Gazans to return to the Strip’s north through the Netzarim Corridor starting Monday morning, reported The Times of Israel.

The ceasefire deal halted the war which began after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.

About 1200 people were killed and Hamas took 251 as hostages.
