Six students arrested for torturing man to death in Dhaka Univeristy hall after suspecting him to be a thief
Six students have been arrested in connection with the murder of Masud Kamal Tofazzal in Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall of Dhaka University of Bangladesh, media reports said.
The arrested students have reportedly confessed their involvement in the crime before the magistrate.
According to reports, the arrested people were identified as Muhammad Jalal Mia of the physics department, Suman Mia of soil, water and environment; Mottakin Shakin of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science; Ahsanullah of mathematics; Al Hussain Sajjad and Wajibul Alam of geography and environment departments.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saddam Hossain recorded confessional statements of the six in connection with the murder case after police produced them at his chamber, sub-inspector Saifur Rahman told The Daily Star.
What happened on Wednesday?
35-year-old Masud Kamal Tofazzal was allegedly tortured to death by some students at the Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall by thought of him to be a thief.
The groups of students initially beat the man in the guest room and forced him to admit the crime.
They reportedly took him to the canteen and forced him to take some food only to return to the hall and continue the torture.
The relatives of the victim told The Daily Star that Tofazzal "lost his mind" after the death of his parents and brother and became a drifter.
Mohammad Amanullah, a supervisor at the university's estate office, filed a murder case with Sahbagh Police Station against some unidentified students, a day after the crime was committed.
The victim was left abandoned at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the doctor had declared him dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, the victim has been laid to rest beside the graves of his parents and brother in Patharghata in Barguna.
Several pictures of the victim having his food in the canteen have now gone viral, leaving people shocked.
