Who is Philip Young? UK man admits drugging, raping ex-wife for 13 years
A British man has pleaded guilty to drugging and repeatedly raping his former wife over a period of 13 years, UK media reported on Friday.
The accused, Philip Young, 49, formerly of Swindon and now residing in Enfield, appeared at Winchester Crown Court on Friday, where he admitted guilt to 48 of the 56 charges against him.
The charges include counts of rape, voyeurism, and administering a substance with intent to stupefy or overpower. Young will stand trial on the remaining charges on October 5, 2026, at the same court.
According to reports, the offences took place between 2010 and 2023. Young was arrested in 2024 and divorced later that year.
A BBC report said Young previously served as a Conservative councillor for Covingham and Nythe on Swindon Borough Council between 2007 and 2010.
James Foster, Specialist Prosecutor at the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), said: “Philip Young has pleaded guilty to 48 serious sexual offences committed against his former wife, Joanne Young. We worked closely with Wiltshire Police to build a thorough and compelling case that resulted in him pleading guilty to dozens of offences today.”
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Superintendent Geoff Smith said he welcomed the guilty plea and praised the survivor’s courage.
“I want to pay tribute to her for her incredible bravery throughout this process. She continues to be supported by specially trained officers,” he said.
Smith also commended the investigation team and thanked the CPS for its role in ensuring Young faces justice for what he described as his “abhorrent actions.”
