According to media reports, the slain officer, identified as Pradeep Tamang, had moved to the US about a decade ago and joined the police department in 2025.

The incident occurred on Sunday, February 1, at approximately 7:30 a.m., when Gwinnett County Police officers were dispatched to 1790 E. Park Place Blvd. following reports of fraud.

“While on scene, officers made contact with a subject who fired shots at two officers, striking both of them,” Gwinnett County Police said in a Facebook post.

“The officers returned fire, injuring the subject. The officers and the suspect were transported to a local hospital with injuries,” the statement added.

Police later confirmed that one officer succumbed to his injuries, while the other remains in critical condition.

Sharing details about the deceased police officer, Gwinnett County Police said: "Tamang joined the Gwinnett County Police Department in July 2024 and graduated from the 121st Police Academy in May 2025."

The suspect has been identified as 35-year-old Kevin Andrews. Authorities said Andrews sustained non-life-threatening injuries and will be taken to the Gwinnett County Jail upon his release from the hospital.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said Andrews, a resident of Decatur, Georgia, has been charged with one count of malice murder, one count of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault upon a public safety officer, and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Reacting to the incident, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp wrote on X: “Today, we join @GwinnettPD in mourning the loss of a brave officer and are praying for the swift recovery of another.”
